Asian stocks climbed toward a new record, with Japan’s markets roaring back from New Year holidays to post the biggest daily jump since 2016. Oil prices climbed, leading a broader measure of commodities to the highest level in 10 months.

US stocks finished the day's session higher as Wall Street closed at yet another record high. The main indexes were boosted by strong US manufacturing data and the rise in the oil price.

UK stocks started the year on the back foot yesterday but bounced back with a 0.3% rise. Next was the big winner - rising by more than 6% - but there were also gains for BP and Shell as oil prices rose above $67 a barrel on the back of protests in Iran, a major oil producer.

  • Prime Minister Theresa May believes Michel Barnier is bluffing when he says there will be no special deal for financial services, officials said, as the UK prepares to negotiate its post-Brexit ties with the European Union.
  • OPEC’s crude production held steady in December as the group approached a fresh year of output curbs in full compliance with its supply deal. The 14 members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries pumped 32.47 million barrels a day, according to a Bloomberg News survey of analysts, oil companies and ship-tracking data.
