Investment Market Update
Asian markets were mixed on Wednesday, taking the lead from Wall Street's narrowly mixed close in the last session. Investors in the region digested mixed trade data out of China and kept an eye on President Donald Trump's tour of Asia.
US stocks closed flat after quarterly earnings from travel websites Tripadvisor and Priceline disappointed. Shares in Tripadvisor plunged nearly 19% after the booking and review website said hotel revenue had fallen 3% year-on-year, hurting profits. Priceline also fell more than 13% after it said profit growth would be softer than in previous quarters.
UK stocks were down on Tuesday with shares in the world's largest security group, G4S, dropping nearly 5% after it downgraded its revenue growth forecast. Primark owner AB Foods fell more than 3.7% despite posting a rise in profits, AB Foods shares were hit after it said that profits at its sugar business were set to fall this year.
- Sky has threatened to shut down Sky News if the news channel proves to be a major obstacle in its takeover bid by Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. Regulators are investigating the deal amid concerns that Mr Murdoch's media empire could become too powerful, Sky told the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that the regulator should not assume "the continued provision" of Sky News.
House prices across the UK are rising strongly and will continue to do so in the months ahead, the Halifax has reported. In the year to October, prices rose by 4.5%, up from 4% in September and the fastest rise since February. It brings the average price of a UK house to a new record high of £225,826.
