Asian markets were mixed on Friday as they reacted to a testimony by former FBI director James Comey in the US on Donald Trump. Japan's parliament passed a one-off bill to allow Emperor Akihito to abdicate, the first emperor to do so in 200 years. The 83-year-old said last year that his age and health were making it hard for him to fulfil his official duties.

US shares were flat despite Yahoo rising 10% after shareholders approved the sale of its core internet business to Verizon. Financial stocks outperformed, as Republicans pressed ahead with a bid to roll back financial rules imposed after the 2008 crisis.

UK stocks closed down as there was little corporate news to excite the market, but in the FTSE 250, shares in laundry services group Berendsen jumped 11% after it looked set to be taken over.

  • Renewable sources of energy have generated more electricity than coal and gas in the UK for the first time. National Grid reported that, on Wednesday lunchtime, power from wind, solar, hydro and wood pellet burning supplied 50.7% of UK energy. Add in nuclear, and by 2pm low carbon sources were producing 72.1% of electricity in the UK.
  • BT has replaced its auditor for the first time in 33 years after an accounting scandal at its Italian business cost it £530m. The former state-owned phone giant has dropped PwC and will replace them with rival accounting firm KPMG.

Market prices will reflect the last closing prices with the exception of the Asian markets which may be still trading at the time the data is obtained. The data for these markets is therefore a snapshot of live trading data obtained between 06.45 and 07.15 GMT. Growth is shown cumulative and is not annualised. A positive currency movement indicates the £ appreciating against the other currency. Performance data does not account for the re-investment of dividends.
