Asian stocks extended their rally from a 10-week high as material and industrial stocks climbed. Japanese equities fell as strength in the yen weighed on exporters after a press conference by US President-elect Donald Trump disappointed investors seeking details on his policies.

US stocks declined as investors assessed President-elect Donald Trump’s comments on healthcare and imports during his first press conference since the election. Semiconductor shares retreated amid declines of 2.1% in Micron Technology Inc. and 3.9% for Advanced Micro Devices.

UK stocks rose slightly further on Thursday, as the FTSE 100 closed at a record level for the 11th day in a row, a feat it has never managed before.

  • There were more first-time home buyers in 2016 than at any time since the start of the financial crisis, according to research by Halifax bank. It also found the average price of a first home in the UK broke through the £200,000 barrier for the first time. Meanwhile, the average first-time deposit more than doubled compared with 2007 to stand at more than £32,000.
  • Germany's economy stepped up its pace of growth in 2016, thanks to higher household and government spending. Estimated figures from its Federal Statistical Office said gross domestic product was 1.9% higher last year than in 2015. The annual figure is based on an early estimated that growth was around 0.5% in the fourth quarter.
