Asian stocks declined, while the dollar strengthened and 10-year Treasury yields rose back above the 3% as investors assessed the outlook for global trade relations and increased tensions in the Middle East.

US stocks rose with the Dow Jones Industrial Average notching its eighth consecutive day of gains as investors digested signs of easing trade tensions between the US and China.

UK stocks fell, weighed down by financials and by a rising pound, after the FTSE 100 recorded a seventh straight week of gains on Friday, its longest winning streak since June 2015, as investors began to warm to UK equities amid a wave of deals and takeovers.

  • US President Donald Trump has justified his pledge to help China's ZTE "get back into business" after critics claimed he was "backing off". He said the country is working on a "larger trade deal" and the Chinese tech firm buys many parts from the US. The US had banned American companies from selling parts to ZTE, after it admitted to making illegal shipments to Iran and North Korea.
  • The US Supreme Court has made a landmark ruling that could allow states across the country to legalise sports betting. It has endorsed a 2014 state ruling in New Jersey which permits sports betting in casinos and at horse racing tracks. The court also struck down a 1992 federal law banning sports gambling. The news sent the share prices of gambling stocks in the US and UK surging, including Britain's William Hill and Paddy Power.
