Asian stocks were mixed with Japanese equities rising and Hong Kong equities falling. Toshiba shares fell after a consortium appeared to take the lead in talks over the sale of its prized chip unit. Toshiba needs to sell the unit to cover losses at its US nuclear operations. Its shares fell 4.5%.

US stocks were mixed as consumer, technology and financial stocks weighed on markets. Apple, which recently unveiled a suite of new products including the iPhoneX, continued to slide, falling 0.9%. The firm's shares have declined by more than 3% since the start of the month.

UK stocks fell while the pound soared after the Bank of England hinted at a possible rate rise in "the coming months". Next shares jumped 13% after the High Street fashion chain raised its full-year sales and profit outlook thanks to "encouraging" trading in the past three months.

  • The Bank of England may be finally ready to deliver an interest rate increase. After false dawns sparked by Mark Carney in 2014 and 2015, a growing swell of BOE policy makers are now leaning more heavily toward the idea that tightening will be needed very soon. That’s got investors putting their money on action as soon as the next meeting in November.
  • China will consider granting foreign investors more access into its electric vehicle market as the world’s biggest market for battery powered automobiles comes out with new policy initiatives.
