Most Asian markets were up, led by gains in Hong Kong, as investors look to Asia’s best-performing developed market amid earnings optimism and signs of an improving economy.

US stocks climbed for a seventh straight session as rallying financial shares added momentum to an advance that sent 7 out of 11 sectors higher on the day, capping the longest streak of gains since September 2013.

UK stocks increased as investors bet on financial stocks following US Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen's hawkish tone suggested US interest rates would rise. A rally in mining shares also lent some support to the broader stock market.

  • Wages grew faster than the rate of inflation at the end of 2016, official figures show. In the three months to December, wages grew 2.6% on an annualised basis in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics. However, that was slower than the previous period, leading analysts to suggest households could face a "squeeze" on spending later this year. The ONS also said the jobless rate held steady at an 11-year low of 4.8%.
  • Tata Steel's British workers voted on Wednesday to accept pension benefit cuts in return for safeguards on jobs and investment, although the Indian company's plan to spin off its entire UK pension scheme still faces regulatory hurdles.
