Asian stocks retreated as investors pulled back on the final day of the biggest quarterly advance in five years for the region’s equities. A rally in Japan faded away in afternoon trading, despite data showing the first back-to-back increase in the nation’s core consumer prices in more than a year.

US stocks received a boost on Thursday following an upward revision to the growth rate at the end of 2016. The economy grew at an annualised pace of 2.1% in the fourth quarter of the year, the Commerce Department said, up from an earlier estimate of 1.9%.

The UK stock market reversed early gains to close the day lower. Morrisons shares rose 2.2% after Bank of America Merrill Lynch upgraded its rating to "buy" from "underperform". The pound rose against the dollar and the euro as tension eased following the triggering of Article 50 on Wednesday.

  • UK house prices fell for the first time in almost two years in March, according to the latest report from Nationwide Building Society. While there’s monthly volatility in price changes, the underlying trend is showing the UK housing market cooling.
  • Lawmakers may get a vote on whether Britain should stay in the European Union’s single market after Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May’s government signaled, fueling calls for Britain to replicate Norway’s trade deal with the European Union.
